The analysis is framed within a traditional, critical discourse analysis perspective, and in the longer, new edition blends anthropologically-oriented with ethnographic-based accounts of the machination behind socially-constructed language subordination processes in Amer- ican English.
The book is likely to have interdisciplinary appeal beyond applied linguistics because of its rich examples — an area in which it excels. At a macro-level, this second edition with its new chapter additions stands poised to reaffirm more current theorizations in world Englishes WE by urging for a re-thinking of the seeming homogeneity implied by nationally-labeled Englishes. Viewed from such a vantage point, EwaA does an excellent job of reminding scholars and students that American English, like its people, is not monolithic or homogenous in spite of any and all attempts towards a suppression and denial of social and linguistic difference — indeed, in spite of any mystification attempts aimed at drowning out its rich accents [pun intended].

To address how the new edition of EwaA fits within the WE paradigm of scholarship is daunting since it entails parsing out current WE frameworks of relevance, which at the risk of oversim- plification, can be divided into three major strands. First, we have macro-social models top-down oriented frameworks premised on political and territorialized-orientations in which we could position diachronic studies of WE from, for example, the Three Cir- cles model, or even diametrically positioned and recently resuscitated second-language based English Language Teaching or English as an International Language models which EwaA seems to over-rely on.
Third, we have hybrid, practice-based frameworks whose interdisciplinarity blends micro-level linguistic workings with macro-level political economy based accounts within a market-theoretic framework — a contemporary model of analysis which the book would have benefited from the most. It is within such a tripartite approach that we can analyze the efficacy of scholarship that this new edition brings to the intellectual table.
As the analysis which follows demonstrates, EwaA succeeds at being both an empirically updated but theoretically outdated account, especially when it comes to the workings of WE. In the areas of updated research, the text is rich in examples of linguistic discrimina- tion on both the legal and sociolinguistic front ch.
It is here that the text demonstrates an inability to move beyond a unidi- rectional critical discourse perspective to analyses which explore causation in much more nuanced terms—a move beyond what happens to why it happens. Such a perspective would surely have the potential to elevate the new edition from its example-oriented focus to a more theoretically-provocative analysis. Now, to the outdated aspects of the text. For a text marketed as a new edition, what is im- mediately apparent are the missed opportunities of theoretical update.
As a consequence, any links to WE have to be indirectly extrapolated, particularly for teachers planning on using this book as a course text. So for example, in ch. This lack of overt connection to WE models is a missed opportunity in the text. Current theorizations utilizing a market theoretic perspective to account for different weightings of WE linguistic capital would add a more complex perspective to the social justice framework the text seems to primarily rely on.

Perhaps it is in such practice-based accounts such as are abundantly cited in EwaA that one is afforded a glimpse of current market operations on a global scale, in particular what similar language subordination processes underpin speaker acts of appropriation, adoption or adaptation of particular world Englishes in trends towards global English homogeneity.
