Residency program vacations


















Residents are given 21 vacation days per year. Residents may take up to 5 vacation days per rotation. Each resident receives a book fund that can be used to purchase a variety of educational materials. The university library, the Texas Medical Center library and the MDACC radiology library provide additional resources such as textbooks, digital teaching media, journals for residents as well as a calm study environment. R1 and R2 residents each receive their own SonoSim devices to learn the basics of ultrasound, how to perform ultrasound scans, and make diagnoses.

All residents have the opportunity to attend the renowned AIRP course during their second year of training, which is now offered both virtually and in-person in Silver Springs, Maryland.

This is a 4-week course that provides a comprehensive review of radiologic imaging and a radiologic presentation of a broad range of diseases and their pathological basis from all organ systems and imaging modalities. The department covers tuition fees for this course, in addition to receiving your regular salary.

Interested residents may choose a month-long elective during their senior year to obtain a Certificate in Healthcare Management through the University of Houston at Clear Lake, which is located in the Texas Medical Center.

The Physician Educator Certificate Program CPEP is an 8-month program for residents who are interested in receiving more training in teaching effectiveness. This certificate program prepares trainees for their academic career, resulting in greater teaching confidence and job satisfaction. This course meets once a month for 8 months. Radiology residents develop skills to become effective educators, including attending workshops, giving lectures to other residents and medical students, and preparing a capstone project.

ESIR training is completed within the 4-year diagnostic radiology residency. Currently, we accept up to 4 senior residents each year for this pathway. Applicants for general surgery certification must acquire no fewer than 48 weeks of full-time experience in each residency year.

This is required regardless of the amount of operative experience obtained. Residents should plan on applying for vacation at the appropriate time of the year to maximize the potential to attend interviews. As stated above, all such days cannot affect the 48 weeks of full-time training per year that is mandatory. Each program must have policies and procedures in place that ensure coverage of patient care in the event that a resident may be unable to perform their patient care responsibilities.
